Going European!

Posted: 11:32AM June 27th, 2011 | Comments

“Being European” has so many connotations, but increasingly it means smart city-planning, especially when it comes to recentering our transportation thoughts away from cars.

The New York Times has a great article today comparing different approches to city-planning and eliminating cars.  The journalist points out that while American cities try to make driving easier - like synching greenlights to create flow - European cities have been doing the opposite.  Not surprising, the result is fewer cars.

Think about it:  Even "solutions" like elecric cars continue to place the emphasis on cars and roads.  Increasingly, major European cities are shutting down roads and transforming them into bike and walkways.

While Madison has improved the reach of its bike paths over the past decade, non-car commuting remains a blip (around 3 percent on a good day) how we get to work.

Put our next Eco-Salon on your calendar and hear some thoughts about how the region can improve its transportation.  Monday, July 11 at Brocach, 7 W. Main; 6 pm.
