Greetings from California

Two primary observations from Bioneers: Dan and I are here in Marin County (over the Golden Gate Bridge and 20 miles north from San Francisco), scouting speakers and inspiration to bring back for Badger Bioneers in Madison (yes, register now!)

Well, before my two observations from the first morning of the conference, actually, let’s start with a weather report: Yes, absolutely ideal. Golden California sun; the air slightly tinged with sea salt and the mossy, vanilla from eucalyptus trees; 2500 people from around the country who want to bring solutions to sustainability issues.

My first observation is: People want to do the right thing. Karen Brown spoke second in the line-up and highlighted two active schools—and what they are doing to integrate natural environment into curriculum. (I dare not say more, and ruin the surprise; we will screen this engaging talk at Edgewood College in three weeks.) But people’s response was excitement and clapping encouragement, leaving a resounding feeling that, sure, why not, we can save the next generation, we can save this fragile earth.

Second, observation? Well, fashion hounds, it seems as if the choice of fashion for the upcoming year (you can look to California for the future, right?) is hippie-chic and flat-footwear (last year’s prediction was cowboy boot for women). Pull out those sundresses and overalls. You heard it here first.

More dispatches from Bioneers to follow!
