Happy Turkey-Winter Squash-Root Veggie-Cranberry Day!

For Thanksgiving this year, with so much turmoil in the world, I'm taking extra time to appreciate all that I have to be thankful for. Number one on that list is the opportunity to intern at Sustain Dane. I've learned so much already in the month-ish I've been here, working on a project that will provide a snapshot of sustainability in Madison and doing research on the state of certain indicators and what is being done to improve them. My research has shown me even more to be thankful for in the city I call home. I'm thankful that 33% of Madisonians carpool, bus, bike, or walk to work, compared with 16% in the state of Wisconsin and 18% in the United States (according to the 2014 American Community Survey). I'm thankful that I live in a place with programs that support female and minority owned businesses (good work, WWBIC and MBE). I'm thankful that I live in a place where urban wildlife is abundant, though sometimes intrusive (here's looking at you coyotes and turkeys!). I'm thankful that having a local, organic, seasonal Thanksgiving dinner is easy in a place with many CSA farms and farmer's markets (53 CSAs in FairShare, warm weather markets every day of the week, and 4 winter markets). My Thanksgiving will be filled with lovely local produce (winter squash, root vegetables, brussels sprouts, and alliums) from Troy Community Farm and I hope yours is also filled with scrumptious seasonal specialties. Have a delicious, grateful, loving, warm, sustainable, and happy Thanksgiving!
