The Stanley Cup (yes, it is June and we are still playing hockey) has become the first major sporting event to go water-neutral!

Last week, the National Hockey League announced that they will replinish each and every drop used at the championship games -- from the water on the ice to the gallons flushed by fans at the stadium.  It is a remarkable statement that recognizes the massive impact that sporting events can have.

Working with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, the NHL will providing funding to release at least one million gallons into the Deschutes River, a waterway that snakes through central Oregon.  Over the past several decades, rapidly growing urban areas like Bend and large-scale agricultural productions have tapped and drained the river to dangerously low levels.

This latest step was pushed forward by Vancouver Canucks, who earlier in the season helped form a Green Sports Alliance with the Seattle Seahawks (NFL), Seattle Mariners (MLB) and Portland Trailblazers (NBA).  Oh Canada!
