My Ideal backyard

As the weather decided whether to transition into springtime or continue squatting in cold winter days, a half dozen of us gathered at the Children’s Museum this Saturday for the second session of “My Ideal Backyard.” Yes, we are optimistic that spring is coming, and that now is a great time to put in place our gardens, to think about planting fruit trees and to sketch out where the chicken coop will go.

Sustain Dane is hosting a new project: My Ideal Backyard, a series of eight hands-on seminars where participants install garden beds, worm bins, water catchments and chicken coops.

Kate Heiber-Cobb, who spearheads Madison-area PermaCulture Guild, led this past Saturday and the previous class. She talked encouraged each of us to look at our yards to see how the wind, water and sun travel over the landscape—and to make plans based on those natural rhythms. She talked about “zones,” and smartly told us to consider how close the garden bed is to the house—and that keeping a compost bin within a quick walk from the back door is particularly a good idea on cold winter days.

Next week, we head out to one of the participants’ backyards and work with Megan Cain from Madison Farm Works to install a raspberry bed!

If anyone is interested in attending just one of the upcoming Saturday afternoon classes, please contact Phil.
