H&H has made strides toward improving the efficiency of its structure in the past several years, including installing solar PV, solar thermal, efficient HVAC systems and LED lighting. This year we retrofitted the existing building automation system—which was not operating as intended and would frequently switch on heat and AC in the middle of the night—so that it now provides optimal temperature conditions at appropriate times.

In the past year, H&H has also made a strong push to build upon previous efforts and promote sustainability internally. We participated in activities such as LoveToRide (biking challenge) and Cool Choices (a daily card game with sustainability-related tasks). We planted a vegetable and herb garden at work for the second year in a row to promote healthy, local and organic eating.

In addition, H&H has always promoted continuous learning. As we dive deeper into the practices of sustainability, we’ve found it helpful to join organizations and attend conferences that positively contribute towards this goal. This year, H&H joined Sustain Dane’s Sustainable Business Network and began attending MadCity BECCsters meetings supported by SeventhWave. For the first time, we also attended the Badger Bioneer conference and will be attending the Wisconsin Sustainable Business Conference in mid-December. By attending various meetings and conferences, our staff is given the opportunity to network, exchanging ideas and pertinent information, thus helping us stay relevant to the conversations surrounding sustainability.

Beyond sustainability, H&H has ramped up its efforts to promote the charitable giving of time and money by its employees to a variety of local and national organizations, including an annual financial contribution campaign for United Way, bell ringing for Salvation Army, and gardening for the Food Pantry Garden Project. The owner and his wife established H&H Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports these and several more drives throughout the year. They have a strong belief in giving back to the community and help to instill these values in H&H’s employees.
