Stacie Reece, Director of Sustainable Business Initiative
My journey to Sustain Dane has been a windy-curvy road, but one that I am grateful to have traveled.
I started out in the private sector doing out what I enjoyed - which was working with numbers. Having been in banking, legal billing and bookkeeping, I had gained a wealth of knowledge and experience. Add in my penchant for armchair economics and it seemed I was bound for the gray cubicle of my choice. However, being a free and colorful spirit kept me looking for something more.
While working on a project to convert a firm wide process into a paperless system (yey!) I was approached by a co-worker. She asked if I had seen An Inconvenient Truth and if climate change was a ‘real’ concern. This gave me pause as I tried to pare down one of the largest issues of our time into a water cooler conversation.
She asked aloud if she should change out her light bulbs (from incandescent to CFL’s) to help in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. I replied that yes, she can take actions such as that to mitigate energy use. But then I pointed to the hallways of lights, to the several offices connected to the hallways and to the multiple floors the law office filled and asked: “How many light bulbs do you think this office has? And not only in this office, how many do large manufacturers have?”
This ‘aha’ moment made me realize I wanted to be part of the movement to help businesses become more sustainable. I decided to go back to school for Sustainable Management, and this year became the Director of Business Initiatives at Sustain Dane.
As I said, the path might not have been straight forward, but the outcome of working with our MPower Business Champions means that I get to help answer the question of how many light bulbs - and future outcomes - can we change together.
