Join us for dynamic program dedicated to the connection of sustainability, birds, and our human impact. Featuring multiple insightful speakers, this event will dive into the relationship between birds, people, and our built environment.
Benjamin Zuckerberg is a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Dr. Benjamin Zuckerberg is a professor in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his MS from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and doctorate from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and then served as a research associate at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
His research focuses on how modern climate change influences wildlife behavior, abundance, and distribution. His lab works closely with natural resource and wildlife managers to guide various aspects of climate change adaptation. Ben teaches a course on Climate Change Ecology and is a strong advocate for the role of community science in understanding how species respond to anthropogenic stressors.
Jeff Galligan is a Co-founder of BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin
Jeff Galligan is a founder of the BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin. This club seeks to create safe spaces for people of color in the outdoors through outdoor birding activities and outdoor experiences. It is his dream to inspire kids of color and provide STEM related opportunities for them. He is also the secretary of the Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance board of directors. Galligan serves on the Bird City Wisconsin Steering Committee, the Natural Resource Foundations Bird Protection grant Committee, teaches Birding 101 for Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance, and is a Wisconsin Master Naturalist. When not involved in all things birds, Galligan is an administrator at Madison College where he is the director of the TRIO Student Support Services program and first-generation initiatives.
Monika Miller is a Project Manager at SmithGroup
Monika Miller, AIA is an Architect and Project Manager at SmithGroup where she leads projects in the Higher Education Studio. Monika the current President of the SW Section of the WI chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA WI) where she has worked to curate events and tours with a sustainable focus. She also sits on the AIA WI Codes and Standards Committee which is a resource to local architects regarding code understanding.
As an architect, Monika believes in a collaborative approach to design. To Monika, architecture is about people – the clients, design teams, building users, and greater community that a building is part of and can have positive impact on. She is passionate about thoughtful solutions that include sustainable building practices. Monika has worked on various project types in many market sectors throughout her career. Having worked on projects around the country, she will speak to her experiences with environmental policies and how buildings of different uses respond to bird populations in different ways.

Doors to the building open at 8 AM, enter the building through the breezeway / main entrance (it’s on the SE side). Registering here gets you on our guest list, please bring a photo ID for possible front door confirmation with security.

Paid parking is available in the South Livingston Parking Garage attached to the Arts + Literature Lab building. 111 S Livingston St, Madison, WI 53703. Free street parking is generally available nearby.
